that that debate has really, really helped mitt romney. >> yeah, i don't think the romney campaign could have wanted to do any more with this debate than they did. if you look across the board at these numbers, wolf, romney has made gains in almost every area including somebody who's better able to improve the jobs situation. he leads -- romney leads obama by eight points on that. so whether it's on the economy, whether it's on leadership, he's now tied with the president. as far as leadership ability is concerned. so i think romney got everything out of that debate and more. >> he certainly did. and if you take a look at -- let me put the numbers back on the screen one more time. earlier this month before the debate, romney was behind the president, the president, 51%, romney, 43%. eight-point difference. now 49% for romney, 45% for obama, a four-point spread. that's a 12-point spread in only, what, three weeks, shall we say? and clearly the major development was his strong performs at that debate. >> you know, wolf, it just shows you that voters are still really weighing the pluses and minu

romney square off in denver for the first of three critical debates. president's being prepped in nevada today. and the gop challenger has some ground to make up because a brand-new "washington post"/abc news poll this morning has the president leading by two percentage points among likely voters. it's not unusual for candidates to try to lower expectations in the days leading up to dedebate. republicans have been playing up the president's eloquence, ever since last week. but it seems somebody forgot to tell new jersey governor chris christie, because he was setting the bar high for mr. romney. listen. >> he's going to come in wednesday night, lay out his vision for america, he's going to contrast what his view is with what the president's record is, the president's view for the future and this whole race is going to be turned upside down come thursday morning. >> upside down is what he says. in just a few minutes we're going to be talking about wednesday night's debate and the president's preparations with brad woodhouse, communications director for the democratic national committee. f

. the romney campaign is pretty pleased with what the american people saw at that presidential debate last week. they saw mitt romney going toe to toe with president obama and so now is another chance they think for the american people to say mitt romney filling out the role as commander in chief and laying out his foreign policy principles and then after the speech is over he will be meeting in a round table with a group of retired generals. again, another one of those images that the campaign would like to put out there of mitt romney as commander in chief. just to talk a little about what you and wolf were talking about a few moments ago, you go into the excerpts and you can take away a few different things. i was listening to a call yesterday and you just mentioned the situation in syria and they were talking about this idea of providing arms to the rebels in syria as an idea that would appeal to the left as to people who look at this from a humanitarian standpoint, and so it was interesting to hear the romney campaign talk about that issue from this standpoint. the other thing they raised

rallied just yesterday. >>> and with one presidential debate behind them, mitt romney is already gearing up for the next face-off with president barack obama. mr. romney held a rally in virginia yesterday and today in florida, preparing for the next debate hosted by our own candy crowley. romney will also hold a rally in maryland tonight. >>> now to the new employment report. the labor department saying 114,000 jobs were created in september. and the unemployment rate fell, coming in at 7.8%. that's a drop of .3% from august. health care gave us the biggest boost in new jobs. transportation had a good month as well, with a 17,000 job gain. >> with only a month away now to the election, the big drop in unemployment has critics suggesting that the numbers may have been manipulated. we look at how the numbers are put together to find out if that's even possible. >> there are a couple things at play here. first, it's from 8.1% to 7.8%. i say forget it, erase it from your head. it doesn't matter. the thing you have to concentrate on is the number of jobs created. 114,000 is right around where

president obama or mitt romney mentioned it at all during wednesday's debate. i was kind of amazed, christine. i was amazed to have a debate focused on the economy and not one word about how these guys would avert the fiscal cliff and not one question from the moderator about the most serious thing that could be facing our economy right now. christine stay right where you are. i want to bring in john king who has been a debate moderator in the past as well as sam nunn, a senator from georgia. he's actively working with both alan simpson and erskine bowles to find sensible solutions to the current gridlock. think of this as simpson-bowles 2.0. senator nunn has been highly critical of both republicans and democrats over their handling of the fiscal cliff that threatens our economy. senator nunn you said both sides steam have a political strategy but their governing strategy is in doubt. those are your words. have you ever seen america so broken that lawmakers would rather take the economy to the brink. why are we richinging this? why are rerisking people's decisions whether to employ

. first, here's my take. sometimes convention wisdom is right. minutes after the debate, the pundits declared mitt romney the winner. he was. he seemed engaged, forceful, punchy. obama seemed passive, detached, and glum. but what's more significant than how romney said things is what he said. romney repeatedly insisted he was not advocating a big tax cut. in fact, he declared unequivocally that he would not cut taxes at all if they added to the deficit at all. now, as "the washington post" reporter checks out, for two years romney has been campaigning on a tax cut that would cost around $5 trillion over ten years. romney said he would eliminate deductions and cut spending to pay for it. he never offers details. he did say he would cut funding for public broadcasting which was 0.01% of federal spending in 2012. medicaid was 0.13%. romney also spoke in favor of regulations including much of the dodd/frank bill and he repeatedly held up as a model his health care plan in massachusetts which has added center the individual mandate and on which obama care is based. romney's transformation

interpretation of today's number. let's get the other side, the new jobs report forced republican mitt romney to alter his attack on the president. with reaction from mitt romney, here is jim acosta. >> reporter: after a couple of days of very positive reviews for his debate performance against president obama, mitt romney is running in political news that may be blunting that momentum. the new unemployment report showing that the jobless rate has dipped below 8%, really taking away one of his key lines of attack against the president. for months, mitt romney has been saying the president failed to take the nation's unemployment rate below 8%, but at an event here in coal country in virginia, romney found a new way to crunch the numbers. here is what he had to say. >> there were fewer new jobs created this month than last month, and the unemployment rate, as you noted this year, has come down very, very slowly. but it has come down nonetheless. the reason it has come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> reporter: now for
